Definition of stress and types of stresss

Stress:  the internal resistance offered by a body per unit area against deformation is known as stress.

* the units of stress depending upon the unit of load and unit of area.

* unit of stress is Newton per metre square.

Types of stresses

The various types stresses may be classified as:

(A) simple or direct stress

1 tension stress

2 compressive stress

3 shear stress

(B) indirect stress

1 bending

2 torsion

(C) combined stress

Any possible combination of type 1and2

1 tensile stress: the stresses induced in a body when subjected to 2 equal and opposite pulls, as a result of which there is an increasing in length is known as tensile stress.

2 compressive stress: the stress induced in a body, when subjected to two equal and opposite pushes as a result of which there is a decreasing in length of the body is known as compressive stress.

3 shear stress: the stress induced in a body, when subjected to two equal and opposite forces which are acting tangentially across the resisting section, as a result of which the body tends to shear off across the section is known as shear stress.
