Definition of strain and types of strain

Definition of strain: the ratio of change in dimension of the body to the original dimension of a body is known as strain.

Types ofstrain

1 tensile strain

2 compressive strain

3 shear strain

4 volumetric strain

(1) tensile strain: when your body is subjected to tensile load, the ratio of increasing length to original length is known as tensile strain.

(2) compressive strain: when a body is subjected to compressive load, decreasing in length to original length is known as compressive strain.

(3) shear strain: in case of shear load, shear strain will be protected which is measured by the angle through which the body distorts.

(4) volumetric strain: the ratio of change in volume of the body to the original volume of the body is known as volumetric strain.
